Well, Abram and Sarai become Abraham and Sarah. Lot needs rescued…twice, then becomes a grandfather (he had a rough time in today’s reading). Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed. God promises Abraham a son by Sarah, and gives him the covenant of circumcision.
At the end of yesterday’s reading, we were introduced to Noah. Today we had the Flood, the Tower of Babel, and were introduced to Abram.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1
What a perfect way to start our Bible reading challenge. “In the beginning” is where God started His creation, and it is where we start our reading of His word.
As we get ready to start our Bible in six months challenge, what translation are you considering reading? I have read through the New American Standard Bible (and am half-way through it again), but am considering the English Standard Version this time around.
If you would like to sample a new translation, but don’t want to go out and buy a new Bible right now, you can go to BibleGateway.com. They have many translations (in many languages). You can read the entire Bible on their site if you like. The site also has a great search feature for helping you find favorite passages, or find one that you can’t quite remember where it is. I have found this site very useful.

We were given two challenges at church today. One was to help our troops, and the other was to help ourselves.
We were challenged with helping provide Military BibleSticks to our troops. For every $25 donated, one soldier can get a BibleStick that he/she can use to listen to the Word. They also get a CD with an MP3 version of the Bible, and a card that they can use to send an audio Bible to their spouse and children.
These men and women are putting themselves in harm’s way to help protect us. We owe it to them to try and help protect them!
Now that we have covered getting the Word in the hands of our troops, let’s get to our next challenge. This one is similar, but has to do getting us in the Word (and thus the Word in us). We at the Mendon First Church of God have been challenged with reading through the Bible in six months. We hope that everyone takes up this challenge.
If we start on July 1, we will have exactly six months until New Year’s. That means that you can read completely through the Bible before you have to put up next year’s calendar. Then maybe we can look at another challenge for the new year (just saying).
By doing this together, we can encourage each other, and discuss what we have learned on this journey. Hmm…how can we encourage each other, and have these discussions? The answer is by using this blog to post comments on our daily reading.
Use this blog to share what you learned in the day’s reading. Maybe one of your favorite stories or verses was in today’s reading. Share it with us. Let us know how the day’s reading, or the challenge as a whole, has affected you. The bottom line is that we want to know how you are doing. EVERYONE!
One more thing. This doesn’t have to be just those who were attending church today. Please spread the word to family and friends. Invite them join us on this journey through God’s Word.
