Just as for a will to be in effect, we are told that a covenant cannot be in effect without a death (of the one making it, or of a substitute) as well. Christ sealed the covenant with His own blood (9:16-22), for without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Christ did not enter into the earthly holy of holies and do so often to sacrifice, but has entered once for all into the heavenly holy of holies to offer up Himself (9:23-28). And “by that one offering has perfected for all time those who are sanctified” (10:14).
Anyone who commit’s a capital crime under the law of Moses dies on the testimony of two or three witnesses and that “without mercy.” In other words, there is no staying of the execution, there is no other choice of the judge once the guilty verdict is given, but death and now (10:28). And we are asked, “How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God?” (10:29). That is to say, just how bad a sentence does the one deserve who has rejected Christ? (Much). Read verses thirty and thirty-one thoughtfully.
“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (11:1). Faith comes from God, we may receive more by asking (Matthew 21:22; John 16:24; James 1:5; 4:3; 1 John 3:22). Faith does much. We need it every moment of every day. There is a great body of believers before us who have demonstrated great faith, and there are those recorded elsewhere who did NOT have or exercise faith. Emulate the first group, and avoid the deeds of the latter.
Proverbs: God gives courage to the righteous so that he can face anything, whereas he gives fear to the unrighteous and they flee at the sound of a falling leaf. Evil men do not understand justice: there is a big part of our problem today. We have no justice because we have so many evil. Think hard about what it means to “pray for” your leaders.
